Back in the Days was a collection of photographs released in 2001 by world renowned author & Brooklyn native Jamel Shabazz. It documented the emerging Hip-Hop culture of the 1980s as well as its impact on inner-city communities. This book was released 10 years ago and sold well over 35,000 copies. This is of course well before Hip-Hop became the mainstream cash-cow that it is today. Jamel Shabazz was able to take photos of everyday people in Brooklyn, Harlem, Queens & every other borough in New York taking part in urban arts (graffiti, breakdancing, ciphers, etc).
10 years later, powerHouse book releases "Back in the Days: REMIX" and adds more photos as well as text to the original urban time-capsule. This is an amazing read for anyone who wasn't born and/or raised int he 80s but would like to see through that lens. A lot of today's fashion, music, and art has been inspired by the 1980s so be sure to check out the this anniversary edition of Jamel Shabazz's amazing work.
