The new docmentary Brooklyn Boheme by writer, journalist and culture critic Nelson George will debut in Toronto this Friday, and Manifesto is bringing you a special way to catch this Canadian debut with a friend.
Brooklyn Boheme is a love letter to a vibrant African American artistic community who resided in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill Brooklyn during the 80's and 90's that included the great Spike Lee, Chris Rock, Branford Marsalis, Rosie Perez, Saul Williams, Lorna Simpson, Talib Kweli just to name a few. Narrated and written by Fort Greene resident Nelson George and co-directed by Diane Paragas, this feature length documentary celebrates "Brooklyn's equivalent of the Harlem Renaissance" and follows the rise of a new kind of African American artist, the Brooklyn Boheme.
Nelson George, a key backer behind Spike Lee's debut feature film She's Gotta Have It, and a legend in the Brooklyn commity throughout the years, will be joining the Toronto crowd for a talk and question period following this Toronto debut.
